Happy Air Max Day folks! After the Air Max 1 and Air Max 90 Ultra releases, Nike has turned to another classic runner, the BW, to give it the weightless treatment. And they have yet another winner. Check out the video above for a sneaker review and to see what I did for Air Max day, and read on for the full review!
The Nike Air Max BW was designed by Tinker Hatfield and originally released in 1991 as part of Nike’s International series of runners. Sporting a bigger window into the Air unit in the heel than its predecessor, the Air Max 90, the BW (which refers to the bigger bubble) brought some more cushioning and a sleeker silhouette. It looked absolutely stunning in the OG Persian Violet colorway which remains my favorite to this day.
The Ultra version of the BW features a completely new upper and a cored out outsole. Ultramesh and Hyperfuse come together to make a breathable and lightweight upper that is perfect for summer. But fear not, targeted placement of the Fuse means no break-in pain.
The outsole has been scooped out for weight reduction and this is something that is very noticeable the moment you pick them up. The bubble however, is not as big as it used to be.
Air Max lettering on the heel counter. The Air Max moniker is synonymous with comfort and the BW Ultra continues in that tradition.
The tongue is pretty minimal, no super padded 90’s deal here. Classic Nike Air logos on the tongue, insole and outsole. The BW managed to make its mark even though it released after the Air Max 90, and in the same year as other Nike heavyweights like the Huarache and the Air Max 180.
Large perforations in the heel add some much needed breathability, making these a go-to for summer. Since the BW is celebrating its 25th birthday this year, Nike also released a very luxe Mark Parker (of HTM fame) version, which is pretty amazing.
I really love what Nike has been doing recently with its older sneakers, updating them with modern materials while keeping the classic silhouettes intact, thereby bringing these old school runners into the modern age without straying from their original designs.
The Nike Air Max BW Ultra is available in Nike stores now.
